Winplus LED Utility Light with Motion Sensor

[Scroll down to view product info]

As a guy, I love working in the garage whether it's to change the oil in my car or doing some sort of diy (do-it-yourself) type project. The thing is that the garage can be a rather dark and dank place as is the case for other workshops. A proper work place should be well lit since it could be a potential safety issue when you're working with tools and it's dark and you can barely see. That's why it makes sense to have the Winplus LED Utility Light with Motion Sensor for your garage or workshop. You can get several of these to make sure your workshop has enough light. It features a motion sensor, so that it automatically turns on when you walk in. This comes in handy if you're hands are full lugging around a lot of equipment and you don't have a spare hand to flip the switch. Not only that, but this shop light can also be used for the office, patio, or any other outdoor seating area. You won't regret getting the Winplus LED Utility Light with Motion Sensor when you realize how nice and bright your work place becomes.

I got these because the seemed like an awesome option. I got 4 of them for my home office and sad they can't be hardwired into a ceiling receptacle. I'm at the moment diy'ing a hardwire method of cutting holes for water proof junctions and a hardwire cable to the ceiling fan box.

I was hoping for instructions to include this, or to include punch out holes like other receptacles. Connecting the mains as well seem complicated as it has 3 layers of protection, 1 of them being the splash proof enclosure, while the other two are just casings around the power supply and terminals for attaching more systems.

Hi @Anthony, it sounds like you're quite handy around the house. I hope you'll be able to install the Winplus LED Utility Lights into your home despite the lack of instructions and the modding you have to do, and I hope it turns out well!

I just installed one of these lights in the garage, great light probably gonna buy more but Im haveing a hard time getting the lights to go off. Ive adjusted the settings and they dimmed down then off only one time. Am I doing something wrong?

Ok, I figured out the "lights staying on" problem I had. Turns out the motion detection is very sensitive. I went to check to see if the light was on before bed (all the lights were off in the house) it was dark, I walked towards the garage door and the Winplus light turned on. The motion was detected through a doggie door with a shaded out swing door covering it. I feel much better. I will just turn the radius sensing down more. Great light with a great price. Going to buy more for sure now.

Hello @Anonymous, thanks for sharing your experience with these Winplus LED Utility Lights. Who knew that a little doggie door was enough to trigger the motion sensor? That gave me a good chuckle, but I'm glad that at the end of the day, they're working out for you that you're willing to get more for your home.

I like my new LED motion light however I am having an issue with it not turning off. It's located in a storage room so there's absolutely no way it's detecting motion where it's located. Any ideas what this could be? Thank you

I have the same problem with the light not turning off. I've checked and changed the settings to a quicker turn-off time. Sometimes it works and turns off; much of the time it doesn't and is on all night long (in a place where there is no motion possible). Troubleshooting in the manual is no help. Any solutions?

I had the same problem with the light not turning off. What I realized is the motion is very sensitive If I enter the garage from the opposite side where the light is I can see its off but it turns on really fast . At least I know its off when I check it buy opening the door really slow and just peak inside the garage. I took the first one back because I thought it was not shutting off .

I understand some people's comments about it being very sensitive to motion but mine is inside an enclosed storage room with absolutely no openings for motion to be detected. The Only way I know it stays on is because I can see light through the very bottom of the door. I'm tempted to return the product in hopes of a new one working properly but it seems as if this is an issue for many.

I'm also having the same issue with the lights not turning off. I can see it through the cracks around the door well before I approach the door. I have it set to the recommended settings for "garage" but they haven't turned off for several days. Is this a known issue and has the company responded? I placed a call to them early Saturday morning and nobody called me back. I love the light, but this might make me take them back if I can't figure it out or get some kind of response from WinPlus.

I just installed mine, today, and have had the same issue with motion sensor as many others. In my case, I'm sure that the issue is that the motion sensor is so sensitive that it is picking up the slightest vibration. I have mine surface mounted on the garage ceiling, and I can tell that it is coming on this way by jumping up and down from just inside the house with the door just barely open enough to see light.

I unplugged it for now because I don't want it coming on throughout the night or whenever we run our washer and dryer. I'm going to try hanging it from eye hooks (which mine did NOT include) to see if that helps to avoid picking up the small vibration. If not, back it goes. It's a nice light, but the cost is a premium for no reason if I have to manually turn it off to avoid it coming on when it should not.

I just bought mine today and reiterate the sensitivity issue. Mine actually turns on because it can detect me THROUGH THE WALL!! It's on the ceiling of my garage and I'm in my living room on the other side of the garage wall. It's already on the lowest setting. I'll give the company a call tomorrow.

Defective product! Yes, it's working as designed--and that "design" is defective in many practical applications. The motion sensor can sense through walls and floors. I mounted one in my basement in a location that happens to be right below a high traffic area. Even at the "Very Near" setting, it still comes on any time someone walks through. It is also 12 feet from another high-traffic area on the other side of the wall, and on the "Mid-Range" distance setting, it will detect that as well--at least on the "Very Near" setting it doesn't have that issue. If you will be mounting these in any kind of area with people moving on the other side of a wooden barrier, don't do it.

Regarding the not turning off: I heard back from Winplus' customer care and they recommended the following:
1 to 6 off
7 and 8 on
9 off
10 on.

I haven't tried it yet, but thought I'd pass their information along.

Lights never turn off even in a wine cellar.. Settings; DISTANCE: Very Near
Time until dim: 30 Sec
Ambient: OFF
Brightness: 100%
Time:30 sec
Tried multiple settings on the two lights purchased.. they are going back

Unknown said...

Thanks for the settings it works now...

Ugh.. bought 2 of these... the first one worked perfect. Second one has the "overly sensitive" problem. Took it back, got another one. #3 has the same problem. Frustrating!

Hi there all. The recent post about settings seems to have solved this "not turning off" issue for me too in my garage. Give it a try

I have the same issue with 8 of them. The just do not turn off. In a room (workshop) door closed they do not turn off. I am far away from the closed door but can see the light from under the door.

I am shocked that costco is selling these as they appear to be defective. Has anyone got them to work?

thx-dave

When placing one of these keep in mind that this in not your typical light activated motion detector. It works with radio waves and can work through walls. So some locations may not work great if they are close to high traffic areas on the other side of the wall. lower the detection range to the minimum required. Metal objects will act like an antenna potentially altering the range.

Unknown said...

I found out, as several others have noted, that the motion detection is super sensitive through a wall or door. I mounted a light just inside the door of my garage. The sensor picks up when we walk down the stairs (through the wall). this means that the light comes on every time we walk down the stairs whether we enter the garage or not. The light is far too sensitive to be mounted in any high traffic area even though there is a barrier wall.

has anyone got these hard wired? No plug

Anonymous said...

Just hard wired one of these units in our garage, as a replacement for an old fluorescent unit. Found it pretty straightforward and a lot neater without the trailing black power cords across the ceiling, and easier than installing new plug sockets. All I did was remove the diffuser cover, remove the LED panel by turning / removing the two plastic "wing nuts" holding the panel in the casing. Pulled the power cord through the grommet and cut it leaving about 1.5 feet of cord. Strip the power cord.

Next, used the template to position and fix the two brackets to ceiling. Used a large drill bit to cut out the hole in unit base to allow the mains power leads to feed through. Installed the unit base on ceiling. Tricky bit was fitting the LED panel back into the base unit with the wing nuts and plastic straps - easier if there are 2 of you ! Once LED panel is back on (hanging from the straps), join the mains and unit power leads together using wiring nuts. Push all wires into base unit and attach the LED panel to the base unit with the two wing nuts. Put diffuser cover on and test.

Hope that helps. Obviously take usual precautions with breaker switches etc.

I had the same sensitivity issue as others and thought we had a busted unit, but using the dip switch settings above solved the problem. Now we can walk past the garage door without it triggering the light, only once you enter the garage does it fire up. Also reduced the brightness to 50% as we're going to have two of these units in the garage, and they are bright !

Overall, happy with these units.

Update : Fitted 2nd light and sensitivity of definitely an issue. This light is also in the garage near a wall (utility area), as soon as someone enters the bedroom at the other side of the wall, the light fires up ! Sensor is at lowest level 1-3M.

Called Winplus, who suggested wrapping the sensor (small stalk that hangs down from centre of LED panel) in tin foil, or putting some on one side to provide directional control ! Sounded plausible and encouraging. Tried it, made the problem WORSE. Must be amplifying the signal rather than suppressing it.

So at this stage, we have a light in the garage that switches on when people enter an unconnected bedroom. This got me thinking... these lights were simply never designed or home use - certainly not for inside the home - but Costco are selling them for the home. The movement sensor is just too sensitive at the lowest level. They appear perfect for 1 storey commercial buildings, large open areas, warehouses, schools etc - just not for smaller properties with lots of rooms separated by thin severing walls.

A light than switched on when someone enters a different room in the house is simply stupid.

I'll persevere to try control the sensor issue, but if anyone finds a solution meantime, please let us know :)

Hi @Anonymous, thank you for sharing your experience with the Winplus LED Utility Lights. Due to its sensitivity issues, you may be on to something when you suggest that these lights were probably designed for larger buildings versus a garage in a home. It'd actually make sense if that were the case.

I have the same issue with the lights not turning off. The slightest vibration turns on the light. My light is installed on the basement ceiling and turns on when there is movement on the floor above. I used the recommended dip switch settings but have the same problem. My 2 lights are going back which is too bad since otherwise I thought it was a good product.

I bought 6 of these and only opened one to try it. I have been struggling with this same issue of the light staying on. This even after adjusting the settings. I have now changed the settings to what a couple people hear have suggested and it appears to be working now. Thanks for all the input and info. I so wanted to make these lights work.

ExecMemberMike said...

Hi @Mark, that's great to hear that you were able to get your Winplus LED Utility Lights to work properly. You're definitely one of the luckier ones on here to have resolved the issue of them staying turned on.

Unknown said...

I have the same issue where it won’t turn off..hanging in the basement. I tried the minimum time of 30 seconds and they stayed on. Then I took the cover off while fiddling with the dips...and it worked as expected. Put cover on... never shut off.

Using a switch for now because they are nice lights with an easy to install plug.

ExecMemberMike said...

Hello @Mike, well I'm glad that you're still able to make use of your Winplus LED Utility Lights albeit with a switch. It seems like these lights are quite good except for the fact that they never seem to turn off.

Mrs. Cynthia Vindiola said...

Why can't we find these at Costco anymore?

ExecMemberMike said...

Hi @Mrs_Vindiola, that's the thing with Costco. Costco is always constantly changing their products that you may see a certain item and by the following week, it's already gone. This is especially true for seasonal products. In the case of the Winplus LED Utility Light with Motion Sensor, it may take a few months before you see these lights (or at least something similar) again at Costco. Hopefully, sooner rather than later, so just keep an eye out for it anytime you make another Costco run. Good luck!

I have exactly the same problem. Too sensitive, detects through wall so it's always on when someone is in the bedroom. Interesting to hear it's radio waves. There must be a way to decrease it.....
