This is impossible to install. I'm an architect and contractor, pretty handy guy, and after 2 hours I gave up trying to align the tiny slots needed to install it to the mounting plate. It's trash.

Hello @Nathan, hopefully this design flaw on the Feit LED Flat Panel Light Fixture is something that the manufacturer will fix in subsequent models in order to make it easier to install.

Salukiman said...

Will one of the dimmers operate more than a single unit? The room already has 3 square circle FL lamp units all wired in parallel to one switch. I'll need to control all three units with a single dimmer switch? Is that possible?

ExecMemberMike said...

Hello @Salukiman, I'm not much of handyman or an electrician when it comes to these things, so I'm not sure if more than one Feit LED Flat Panel Light Fixture can be controlled with a single dimmer switch. It would make sense if you were able to do that though since that's a common situation that I'm sure many people have.

I completely agree with Nathan - those tiny wholes are impossible to align, after trying for two hours, it hangs now on 2 of the 4 on the ceiling.

Before you drill the huge 1/2 wholes, think twice, if you give up trying to install it, you need to find another big lamp to cover those wholes, or fill them.

I would like the CEO from Feit trying to install this lamp standing on a latter with the hand over head .. and first trying to fit the cables flush into the whole.

This is a stupid design, stay away, buy something else

Hi @TomiSenf, ya I really do hope Feit makes some improvements in the design of the Feit LED Flat Panel Light Fixture. It seems to be a common issue for many people.

I've installed 3 of these flat panel LEDs and I couldnt disagree more. It took me a between 1-5 minutes to mount each panel. It takes a bit of finesse to get all four mounts to line up but it's not nearly as hard as people are making it out to be. They look great in my living room and bedroom! Nice warm white.

ExecMemberMike said...

Hello @Brewer, I'm glad to hear that you haven't had any issues with the Feit LED Flat Panel Light Fixture and that it's totally working for you. I wonder what your secret is when it comes to installing this fixture.

I'm no electrician by any means... It took me 15 mins to install this flat panel LED fixture in my utility room... most of the time was spent fixing the hot leg from the ceiling in which the plastic cracked off the wire... I'm planning to buy two more for the hallway...

ExecMemberMike said...

Hello @Rick, thank you for sharing your thoughts on the Feit LED Flat Panel Light Fixture. It's good that they seem to be working out for you and your home.

Worked great in my closet. The slim profile takes up very little of the precious storage space. I love the edge lit design and am planning to put eight in my kitchen to light it up like a supernova! I didn't see the need for a ceiling can with joist bracing. Just put a j-box in the attic right on the drywall and made the connections. Panel is light enough to not require extensive support. The alignment of the little hook-feet did not present any problems for me, but I build engines for a hobby so maybe my opinion doesn't count.

Took me near 3 hour to install this light. I wanted to give up few times but since I already drilled 4 big holes, I had to finish it. These tiny slot are very very difficult to lock on to, as result I have a lot scratches on my ceiling. I am very handy, flipped few homes renovated myself. This installation is very different.

Hello @George, thank you for your feedback. It appears that the Feit LED Flat Panel Light Fixture is just a user-unfriendly product when it comes to installation. Hopefully, the manufacturer can make some improvements to the design.

I would sure appreciate some hints on how to get those tabs to line up with those slots ... when you're on a ladder in a dark room and you can't see either the tabs or the slots.

Anonymous said...

Not sure if people will still read these but installing this particular fixture can actually be annoying (especially if you're a person with weak shoulder muscles), however you can make the whole process much easier. To do so first make sure the tabs/hooks on the plate are straight and not bent (they're pretty thin and it's easy to bend them if you already tried to unsuccessfully hook the fixture to these tabs/hooks a few times). Second - use a pencil or something easily erasable to mark the location of the tabs/hooks on both your fixture and the ceiling, from each side, and use a ruler for a better precision when making those marks. If you'll follow those two tips - you won't have to waste hours on installing it.

Hi @Anonymous, ya people still drop by and read the comments on the Feit LED Flat Panel Light Fixture, so thank you for sharing your experience and providing some helpful tips on installing them. I'm sure people will find this information very useful especially from someone who seems very handy like yourself.

Not took late. I am still trying to decide to buy these... at 26$ each at a discount store. I see mixed reviews and now wonder what to do.

ExecMemberMike said...

Hello @Stacie, you can always buy just one of the Feit LED Flat Panel Light Fixtures from the discount store just to see how it goes first before buying more.

Not sure if anyone else noticed but the led connector is backwards compared to every other led light I've found. Male on the light fixture and female on the pigtail. I have to cut off the existing led connector on my new cans and wire nut the other connector provided with the light.

ABitHandy said...

I'm somewhat handy but definitely no pro or contractor. I wasn't sure if I'd like the light so I was reluctant to go drilling 4 holes in my ceiling where another lighting fixture would be unlikely to cover up. Instead, I went with those 3M easy peel stickers. I attached the unit to a string that would hold everything up if the stickers failed. Anyways, after applying 8 stickers that hold 3 lbs each (though rated only for shear stress), I was able to install the light. It turned out great. I'll keep it around for a while to allow it to grow on me. There is a slight chance that I'll continue using the sticker permanently.

If you are going to attempt the same, make sure to prepare the ceiling surface REALLY well. Make sure the paint/primer is on there solid. Also make sure that there is no oil residue from deep frying and such. Then, apply the mounting plate. Get a broom or equivalent with a soft-ish tip and press on each sticker multiple times. Wait an hour and press again. Let the bond settle without the extra load of the led panel -- perhaps several hours and occasionally reapply pressure on the plate just above the sticker pads.

As for lining up the tabs with the slots.........I had zero issues. It took a few minutes. Make sure you are able to get your head right up to the ceiling to align the tab with the slots. I don't do any major projects around the house but I guess I am good at working on small things in tight spaces (i.e. work on cars). Again, took no more than a minute for me to mount that panel itself. YMMV.

Hi - I am trying to replace a old lighting fixture(casio style, with lots of bulbs) but the hole is larger than the mounting plate. I went with the dimensions on the box but when I looked at the plate I had to give it up. Need a bigger mounting plate to fit in a bigger hole. This is going back to Costco. I wish the instructions on the packaging were more detailed so customers don't have to guess.

Unknown said...

The installation is a major issue. Even if you can line up those damned tiny 4 tabs, there is no way to snug the fixture to the ceiling. AND, as mentioned above the huge mounting plate makes giving up and changing to something else, an almost impossible option! My closet ceiling is 'popcorn' so the gaps are ridiculous, but if it were flat and true I'm pretty sure the installation would scratch the ceiling paint. The light itself is excellent EXCEPT, after 3 months of loving the light output but being frustrated by the crappy installation (I kept telling myself "Hey, it's just the closet"), the damned thing stopped working!! Good power to the pigtail but no light. VERY FRUSTRATING. Now I'm stuck with replacing it as the stupid mounting plate and associated holes have destroyed my ceiling. One of COSTCO's darkest purchases.

ExecMemberMike said...

Hello @Drew, thanks for adding your two cents in regards to the Feit LED Flat Panel Light Fixture. It's unfortunate that it stopped working even if it's just in your closet, and it's even worse that you had to mess up your ceiling in the process of installing it.

Sixgap said...

The mounting design is very stupid, but as another said get your eyeballs at ceiling level and it took me a minute to get it attached. Also ensure the wires are in the junction box as much as possible. I had to clear a hole to make sure the last 2 inches would slide up there. Looks good when done, nice led light.

ExecMemberMike said...

Hi @Sixgap, thanks for providing some helpful tips when installing the Feit LED Flat Panel Light Fixture. I'm sure people who had a tough time putting this light in their home will find this quite useful, and I'm glad that this light seems to be working out ok for you and your home.

Hello @Unknown, I'm glad to hear that you had no issues installing the Feit LED Flat Panel Light Fixture in you home. It's a good thing we have YouTube and Google around as a resource for DIY projects and/or handy tasks around the house. I can't imagine what people did without the internet back then.

Unknown said...

where can I find the install information before I buy?

ExecMemberMike said...

Hi @Unknown, you may want to check out the manufacturer's website (Feit Electric) for the user's manual. I know they have a list of their various lights and bulbs with the corresponding documentation that would come with it. Hopefully they'll have the Feit LED Flat Panel Light Fixture listed.

i got 5 installed but it is difficult, all phases. there is no adjustment if you mounted the plate not square. it's hard to connect the wire harness to the fixture with one hand while the other is holding up the fixture. it is difficult to line up the 4 mounting pegs to the fixture. everyone should have a 2nd person for when hands/arms above you head holding fixture give out. if you do give up you'll already have 4 screw holes in the ceiling spaced 12" apart, hard to cover with next fixture. i called them and asked if future fixture will have this same configuration to replace this fixture or at least the new mounting bracket must have the same screw hole position and they can work on the pegs that connect to the fixture. i agree with TomiSenf, i'd like to see the $20 million dollar a year salary CEO (or anyone in the company install this light). i wish we could get michael moore to corner these idiots making hundreds of millions per year (counting all executives). i've been remodeling a home for 5 years, every trade/item. almost all of american corporations are like this since the 90s. a child who touched their products could tell you what's wrong with them yet the CEOs/Executives have no idea. we all know it's because of cutting workers salaries/benefits and transferring those billions to the CEOs/executives. the workers are like homedepot, walmart, lowes... with such low pay and the entire worker force turns over in a year because of such low pay.

ExecMemberMike said...

Haha, I'd love to see Feit's CEO try to install the Feit LED Flat Panel Light Fixture, @Anonymous! That'd definitely funny. Maybe only then the manufacturer will finally see the problems and issues with installing this light fixture onto a home's ceiling.

I just purchased 4 of these units at my local Costco to install on my sun porch, installed easily and work almost too well, thinking of a dimmer! Only problem I have is that I am using surface mount wiremold boxes the panels hang about 1-1/2" below the ceiling and I plan to box them in with some crown molding or something similar.

ExecMemberMike said...

Hi @JohnR, that's good to hear that these Feit LED Flat Panel Light Fixtures are working out for you and your home. Ya, that would definitely be neat if you added a dimmer to them.

I bought two of these lights and agree there are difficult to install to the included mounting plate, but found a solution. Throw the mounting plate away and use 30lb double sided tape around the perimiter to stick it to the ceiling. Then use wall caulk to seal around the frame of the light. The light is now flush to the ceiling and attached nicely.

Thanks @Unknown for the valuable tip in regards to installing the Feit LED Flat Panel Light Fixture. That's something I probably wouldn't have thought of. I'm sure that'll come in handy and be a big help for those who are having issues installing this fixture into their homes.
