During the holidays, I try to give my friends’ kids some gifts that are not only fun but also educational. The Smithsonian line of toys is a great way for kids to get started in their young engineering experience. Smithsonian has either the Motor-Works or Jet-Works available at Costco. The Motor-Works is a working model of a 4-cylinder engine with valves that move, spark plugs that fire and pistons that drive the crankshaft. The Jet-Works is a jet engine that lets you control the thrust and turbine speed. I myself like the Motor-Works since I’ve always been interested in the way cars work. So jumpstart your child’s interest in the sciences with the Smithsonian Motor-Works or Jet-Works.
