Hiking has always been one of my favorite activities. You can really enjoy nature and the outdoors and it's great exercise too. When I hiked atop Half Dome in Yosemite a few years ago, it was probably one of the most strenuous hikes I've had to endure - 10 hours total (6 up, 4 down). Along the way, I saw a few people using some trekking poles as they're hiking. Now I've always thought that trekking poles made you look kind of funny and totally uncool when you're hiking, so I always opted not to get any. Let me tell you though that if you plan on going backpacking or hiking a very long trail, trekking poles make a huge difference. It's a good thing Costco sells the Cascade Mountain Tech Carbon Fiber Trekking Poles. There are probably better poles in REI, but these are good enough for just a fraction of the price. You won't need poles for a simple, leisurely hike, but it really helps on those strenuous death marches that go on for several hours. They help with balance and make it easier for your back and knees which applies to me. I wasn't aware though that using trekking poles makes you burn more calories and works your upper body which are both an added bonus. You would think that trekking poles aren't worth having to lug them around, but these poles are light and help you more than hurt you during your hikes. It's definitely worth the investment whether you're a Bear Grylls type outdoorsman or just a weekend warrior. You're body will thank you for it.
