Sky Thunder RC HD 8500WH Drone

[Scroll down to view product info]

Drones used to be a rich person's toy up until recently. The fact that Costco sells various drones is a clear indication that it's not uncommon now to see an ordinary person playing with a drone. What makes the Sky Thunder RC HD 8500WH Drone so special and different from most other drones though isn't the fact that it can do 360° stunts or that it has a built-in camera, but you can use the high definition camera to live stream video. With the use of a smartphone, you can see what the drone sees while in mid-air. That way you can control this pro-live drone without actually looking at the drone itself. The live streaming wifi video and photo will give you a whole new perspective on the view above while in mid-flight. Now that's cool. The Sky Thunder RC HD 8500WH Drone will for sure make a great gift for your child or for yourself this Christmas.

Does it have the 'return to home' function?

Hello @ben, I don't believe the Sky Thunder RC Pro-Live Wifi Drone has a Home button. According to the picture, it does, however, have a "Take Off/One Key Landing". That seems to be the closest thing to a Home button. I hope this helps.

How long is the flight time for this drone

ExecMemberMike said...

Hello @Unknown, unfortunately the box for the Sky Thunder RC Pro-Live Wifi Drone doesn't seem to indicate how long the flight time is for this drone. Perhaps a call to the manufacturer can give you an answer to your question.

How big is the drone?

The manual states flight time around 10 minutes (hover) with a recharge time of 150 minutes. I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that range is reduced when streaming video. The camera has some sort of shock mounting system, but not a gimbal per se. There is no return to home feature.

Thank you @Anonymous, for confirming the flight time for the Sky Thunder RC HD 8500WH Drone. Ya, that makes sense that the drone's flight time decreases if it's streaming video since it's using up more battery power.

I purchased one and am now having a very difficult time finding parts (blade protectors). The SYMA website does not even recognize the model and no drone parts website has any info on them.

Where do you order replacement blade covers? You can't find any information on this product hardly anywhere? The blade covers pop off in flight and being black are very difficult to find. Need to be able to order replacement blade covers! The whole device is grounded if one of this little parts flies off anywhere over the land and could fly off anywhere!

I have had the same bad experience of blade caps falling off within first 10 minutes of using and now we can't fly the drone.

Flew mine for the first time today, broke a prop protector and lost a prop cap. However, the prop blades lock on with a twist while holding the spindle nut with the supplied wrench. It doesnt appear that the cap actually hold the blade on - it just slides on with a friction fit. The drone might be flyable without the cap, but it was too dark to try by the time I got the blade back on. will try tomorrow and advise. Still, l want to find replacement parts if anyone finds any info.

Just found this link: http://www.halfchrome.com/syma-upgrades-their-x8-lineup-x8sc-x8sw/

Apparently the 8500wh is marketed under another product number, and is an upgrade yo an older unit. Might be able tyo find parts here.

where can I get extra batteries

Received this for the holiday and already lost one of the propeller protectors on a rooftop. Does anyone know where I can find more?

Same problem here...blade guard broke first flight...hope I can find parts?

Unknown said...

Thank you egondella, your advice worked.
I was able to lock the blade back on with he plastic wrench. We can fly it well without the caps and it worked quite well, smooth flight in light wind and video and pictures came out nicely with the camera.

Glad to help Nathan.

Per my earlier post, check out this article http://www.halfchrome.com/syma-upgrades-their-x8-lineup-x8sc-x8sw/

Looks like parts will be available soon thru Amazon or Bangood.com, and they might be on the Syma site under their model number. A backup battery or 2 will be my first buy, since you only get 15 minutes of flight time per 2.5 hour charge. Prop guards and caps too.

Does anyone know of any other rotor blades that can be used as replacements? Can't find any for the x8 models that look compatible. My son has already used his extras...

The manual says that 150 minutes are needed to fully charge the battery and deliver 10 minutes of flight time.

FYI to all,

I broke one of the prop guards. Picked up some of that "5 Second Fix" with the "UV" light in one end. Stuff works great, and in 5 seconds unbelievably. Glued it back together and it is solid as a rock.

Have you tried to caliber the drone? It helps after a few crashes. You can caliber by holding both joysticks to the bottom right corner at the same time for about 3 seconds. Hope it helps

I purchased on for my daughter. It does drift a bit too but I am training my daughter to control it. We haven't tried trimming it out yet. We have crashed it twice, once into a tree about 30' up then to the ground and the other landing, it has proved to be very durable as we haven't broken anything yet. We like it, it works well. I am thinking about modifying the battery to accept a 2600mah 7.4 volt battery because I can get them for about $10-15 on the hobby king website. also you can speed up the charge time to about 30-45 min with a lipo fast charger from any hobby store or hobby king. So far a great drone, it flew well right out of the box.

One of my prop caps flew off also and prop for that matter put a new prop on and flies fine without the prop nut/cover

I've flown mine several times now. Have had no problem with drifting. In fact mine is very stable. Captured some good video. But I did trim mine right out of the box. Very easy to fly once you get used to it, which really only took one flight for me. I did crash it twice the first day but other than losing a prop cap (which is only for looks, it does not secure the prop) and breaking a protector (which I glued with that 5 second bond glue with the UV light) its very resilient. Also, if you're concerned about looks, automotive vacuum line caps can be used as prop caps in a pinch. Just get the correct diameter. Ordered spare batteries, props, and protectors on 12/29, (they were out of prop caps) and they arrived yesterday, so turn around on spares is good. Order parts by calling 510 895 8059. Overall, I'm happy.

Does this drone fly in the rain?

Call 510 895 8059 for parts. No tracking. Seems sketch but they bill you what they say and then the parts arrive via US mail a few days later.

Same problem with the blade covers. Tried to order replacement parts and can't find them. Might have to return :(

Unknown said...

Does anybody know what happens when the drone gets out of range from your controller? Just had this happen and would like to know if it keeps flying or will it automatically throttle down? Thanks in advance.

Unknown said...

It will land itself
