It's highly recommended to change your car's oil every 3000 miles or so, but using synthetic motor oil like Mobil 1 5W-30 Synthetic Motor Oil, your car can go longer without an oil change. That and using synthetic motor oil is healthier for your car engine. Be sure to always use synthetic. If you go get your oil change at a shop, a synthetic oil change can run you anywhere from $40 to $80. If you get your synthetic motor oil in Costco and do it yourself, it'll be way cheaper. My old Honda Accord uses about 4-5 1 quart bottles of motor oil. At Costco, Mobil 1 5W-30 comes in a box of 6 bottles (6 quarts total). Not only is it cheaper, but you'll know for sure that you're using full synthetic. Your mechanic can be putting the cheap stuff in your car but charging you for synthetic. There was one time I brought my car in for service which included an oil change. When I got the car back, the engine didn't even have any oil in it! I drove 10 miles with no oil in my car! It's a good thing my car didn't seize, but driving without any oil is so bad for your engine. If you do your own oil changes, you'll know for sure that you're doing it right. Your car will thank you for it. Costco also has 10w-30 synthetic motor oil if your car uses that instead. You can go with Valvoline, Quaker State, or Castrol, but your car deserves the best which is Mobil 1. If you're going to be changing your own oil, also make sure you have the appropriate oil filter, wrench, sockets, and gasket.
