I was just looking at this NXR grill at my local Costco (Richmond, BC Canada) the other day. While I have not had a chance to cook on one as I don't own one, I must say that I am impressed with the build quality of this grill.

The cooking grate is a very heavy stainless steel, (pick it up, it is impressive in its weight!). The burners look to be solidly built and everything I could see is built of stainless steel. Here in Canada this grill sells for $124.99 - a bit pricey, but if it lasts as long as I think it will and cooks the way a grill should, then it will be well worth the price.

I would love to hear from someone who owns one what they think of it.

ExecMemberMike said...

Hi @Jim Pook, yes I agree the NXR Table Top Grill seems to be well built even though you woudn't think it by just looking at it. Usually grills of this size are made with flimsly materials, but not this grill which is indeed quite heavy. I bet steaks will get a really good sear once the grates on this grill are seasoned after a few uses.

I was actually just in Canada a few weeks ago for business, so you'll see on this blog some items from the Costco in Barrie, Ontario (about an hour from Toronto). I like how there were some products I found in the Costco in Canada that aren't available in the Costcos here in California.

I bought one today and I can't get it to light...tank is on etc.

ExecMemberMike said...

Hi @Anonymous, if you're having trouble lighting your grill and you just can't get it to work, you may want to return it and exchange it for another - the one that you got may just happen to be defective. It's a good thing that Costco has a pretty good return policy for instances like these.

We are not able to get the NXR
BBQ at the costo stores in Nampa and
boise idaho. They both were to receive a shipment April for 42 each store and now they it is not available. When will the be shipped to

costco in Idaho?

ExecMemberMike said...

Hi @Cindy, the inventory for different Costco locations varies. It is rather weird though that the Costcos near you were supposed to get some of the NXR grill in stock, but you still haven't found them yet. Maybe those Costcos will put them out for display in this last week of April before the end of the month. Good luck...I hope you're able to find it!

We saw this grill at Seattle Costco, agree it is high quality and impressive for the price, wondering if anyone knows if it could be converted to natural gas?

We have a gas supply in the back porch from the kitchen, and this would be a great grill, any advice or comments would be helpful.

ExecMemberMike said...

Hi @Anonymous, thanks for letting the readers know that you spotted the NXR grill in the Seattle area (btw, I visited Seattle a year ago and I loved the place!). That would be kind of cool though to connect a natural gas line to it if that's possible. Unfortunately, I don't know much about this type of do-it-yourself projects involving gas and electrical lines. I'd be too scared to play around with that kind of stuff. If you attempt to do it, be careful and good luck!

Hope you like your steaks beige. Preheated for 15 minutes; can barely get a grill line.

ExecMemberMike said...

Hi @Anonymous, I'd be more concerned about the beige color on your steaks more so than the absence of grill marks. To get the brown, caramelized color, I would usually remove the steak from the refrigerator about 20 minutes prior to grilling (so you don't run the risk of over cooking trying to get a good sear) and pat dry with a paper towel to remove any excess moisture.

Does anyone know where to get a cover for this little grill?

ExecMemberMike said...

Hi @Susan, I'm not sure if they have a cover specifically designed for this grill, but what you could do is just buy a cover for a smaller Weber grill instead. I know Weber has some inexpensive covers which might be good enough to cover the Duro NXR Table Top Grill. I hope this helps!

I am trying to find one of these to give to my parents. If you run across one at a costco please let me know.

ExecMemberMike said...

Hi @Kevin, as mentioned in my post, I saw the Duro NXR Table Top Grill in the South San Francisco, CA location and someone commented that he saw it in Richmond, Canada. Hopefully, other readers will post which Costco locations they happened to see this grill and that one will be near you. Good luck!

Jason R. said...

Does this run only on a 20lb tank, or can it run on both 20lb and small portable tank?

ExecMemberMike said...

Hello @Jason, I'm not sure if the Duro NXR Table Top Grill can handle one of them smaller 1 lb propane tanks since it only indicates that it uses a 20 lb tank. Assuming you can connect a portable tank though, I would think that you'd need to get an adapter of some sort. So ya, sorry if I can't answer your question.

I purchased this particular brand of grill. Impressed with its 20k btu output. I am living in Dallas, Tx and the grill functions admirably. I have had it for a week, and have done "5 Star" grilling of ribeyes, burgers, and hot dogs. Overall, I am very pleased with this unit compared to my Pinnacle five burner grill I used to own.
However, the grease drip pan is shaped as a rectangle and easily can cut yourself on the sharp edges. They corners are not rounded so you have to be careful. Also, the fasteners used in assembly are blind rivets. A.K.A. pop rivets instead of screws or other type of fastener. My grill will be primarily sitting on a table top, or packed into the bed of my truck. I feel it will hold up well. I highly recommend the purchase of this grill if you are feeding 2-3 people at a time.

ExecMemberMike said...

Hi @Anonymous, thank you for your thoughts on the Duro NXR Table Top grill. In just about a week, it sounds like you got a lot of use out of it already. I'm glad that the food you grilled turned out good. You'll probably be making some delicious grilled food with it for years to come.

I was really looking forward to taking this grill out this weekend for family camping, but I’ll be taking it back after one outing.

I could deal with its size even though it's on the large side, and it is sturdy but still easy to carry. It wasn’t clear in our store because the demo was banded down, but the legs do not fold down so that does not help. I did like the way the lid latches down.

I really liked its ability to be used with a standard propane tank but the 2X 10,000 BTUs burners do not have a good heat intensity. We pulled in late our first night and simply wanted to grill brats and hot dogs. I hooked it up and it lit right up straight out of the box. It was still quicker and easier than a fire but the cooking time took longer than expected.

The next morning I was really looking for to a quickly brewed pot of coffee. After quite some time, the coffee never did percolate and I had to put the pot on the campfire (the point of having the stove was not have to wait for a fire). We also had bacon on the other burner which cooked but again, took longer than expected. I’d estimate it was at least 20-25 minutes.

The next morning I removed both the grill and the heat shield and placed the coffee pot on top of the burner. That method did get the coffee to percolate quickly but leaves me down one burner.

For all the promise it held, the grill is too far above from the burners to burn hot enough for our camping needs.

we bought this for 99 bucks and had one trip ti use it. I am a grill meister and grill most if our meals in our outdoor kitchen in AZ. I bought this for our travel trailer. We leave for the summer to beat the heat and I NEED a good grill. I like buying from Costco because they will take back a product for any reason.

We went to the rim, just above Payson, AZ near Heber and dry camped. We brought 2 Prime steaks 2 baking potatoes and asparagus that I cooked in foil with butter and spices.

The steaks were quite thick, the potatoes where not very big, but the grill had plenty of room to put all items on at one time. The grill did a great job of getting hot FAST. We started with the potatoes while having cocktail hour. Once the potatoes were on for about 1 hour, I put the steaks on and made sure I had a great sear on both sides and finally placed the foil pouch on to finish the veggies.

The grill cooked the steaks to perfection. Perfect grill marks on the outside and a med rare inside. The potatoes and veggies cooked perfectly as well.

Pros:
I love the burner layout, as I am a indirect cook most of the time.
The 10k btu burners met my expectations for fast heat
EZ to start the grill
I like the lock down feature for traveling
I like the grease trap
It can be modified for a quick connect on my RV
I LIKED the Price $99

CONS:
No folding legs
No pre-made mounting system for my Travel Trailer

I would give it **** out of *****

Hi @Anonymous, it sounds like you had a pretty awesome trip with stunning views and good food. I'm glad that the grill worked well for you as you used it on the road. You'll probably get to cook different types of food on the Duro NXR Table Top Grill as the both of you will see more of the country.

Anonymous said...

We are having a problem with the burners flaming up and charring the meat. It seems to be too hot even with one burner turned off. Anyone have this same issue?

ExecMemberMike said...

Hi @Anonymous, that's really weird that your Duro NXR Grill is running too hot. The only thing I can think of is that maybe the grill is on too high, but I'm sure you already had it on the lowest setting. If this continues, at least you can easily return it to Costco and say that you got a defective unit.

Dave said...

Hi @Dave, that's totally awesome! Nothing beats a Duro NXR Table Top Grill other than a free one! I hope you'll be able to fire it up on this long 4th of July holiday weekend.

Hello @Dennis, I can't believe I overlooked your comment because somehow I just noticed that I never got back to you (I was on vacation in Hawaii the week you posted your comment). My apologies for responding to you very late. Anyway, thank you for sharing your experience with the Duro NXR Table Top Grill. I guess there's some room for improvement in regards to the grill.

Hi,
I am wanting to buy this grill, but only if it can convert its large gas line connector to a smaller recyclable Coleman type of gas supply. Do you think this is possible?

ExecMemberMike said...

Hi @Anonymous, as mentioned in one of the comments above, I'm not much of a handy man type that I'd be too scared to mod the Duro NXR Table Top Gas Grill to fit a smaller Coleman gas tank. If you do attempt to do this, please exercise caution though. Good luck!

Anonymous said...

Hi guys, if you want to use the 1Lb tanks with this bbq you'll need an adapter such as this:

Thanks for the tip @Anonymous! I'm sure a lot of people will find this information helpful if they want to hook up a smaller tank to the Duro NXR Table Top Grill.

I just bought this BBQ from Costco. I put it together then realized that there was a warning on the outside of the box it came in. Posted in BIG letters on the inside page of the booklet reads CALIFORNIA PROPOSITION 65 WARNING WARNING: This product contains chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm.

What the hell is this?!

ExecMemberMike said...

Hi @Anonymous, I've seen this same warning on other products like cans of paint or a box of nails, but never on something that'll be in direct contact with food. I'm surprised this warning wasn't on the outside of the box itself. Thanks for letting us know about this.

Anonymous said...

Hello Mike. The post previous to this one, is also mine. I bought the BBQ in Ottawa Canada. This warning is also on both the front and the back of the box. It's a white section on the left hand side common to the name of the BBQ. I thought it odd as well. I'm not sure if i should use this product or not. I'm trying to understand why a warning like this would be on a product that cooks food. Is there any way for me to find out if these chemicals are in the metal or just in the packaging. I too have seen this type of warning but on a can of an oil based preservative. Has anyone else not noticed this warning?

Unknown said...

I did notice this sign too. I am worried to open it and thinking of returning it.

Unknown said...

I found this.

PROPANE contains chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer or reproductive harm. State law requires us to warn you of the presence of these chemicals. Benzene, soot and formaldehyde are such chemicals. A trace amount of benzene may occur in propane, but will normally be consumed during combustion.

Exposure through leaking gas is possible. Soot and formaldehyde, byproducts of burning gas, are minimized by proper combustion. Delta Liquid Energy encourages all of its customers to use propane safely. You should read and follow all use, care, and manufacturer instructions for propane appliances and equipment. proper ventilaion and frequent inspection of propane appliances and equipment are highly recommended.

http://www.deltaliquidenergy.com/safety-first/

ExecMemberMike said...

Hi @Sadqain, thanks for posting that since most gas grills use propane and I'm sure using charcoal in itself has plenty of chemicals as it is. It does make me wonder though about that prop 65 warning because when you think about it, I'm sure most everyday items have chemicals in them (the paint on your walls, lead on children's toys, the wood finish on your kitchen table, pesticides on the fruits and vegetables you buy at the grocery store, etc.). Some items have more chemicals than others, so who knows how much chemicals are in the Duro NXR Grill compared to other items we have? Not only that, but no matter what grill you do use, if your food has a little bit of char on it, you'll definitely be consuming carcinogens right there. I guess it all just depends on your level of comfort.

I just Purchased a Coleman NXT 200 before wandering into Costco and seeing the DURO NXR. Can you please help me as I'm a bit confused. The Coleman was $349. And states it is 2187 cm2 and 2 burner 20 000BTU while the Duro NXR is 1645 cm2 and has 2x 10 000 BTU ....Therein lie my confusion. I've read reviews on this page stating the NXR does NOT give off adequate heat while the Coleman reviews all state how high the temp gets and recommends bbq'ING on lowest setting to avoid burning food. I am thinking about returning the Coleman grill and buying 2 Duro NXR and still pocketing $100....problem is I bought the grill as a Caterer and need to have a bbq not take a very long time to grill.... perhaps the coleman burners are
20 000 each while the NXR states 10 000 X2 ? How are BTU rated, Per burner???? I'm really concerned about the reviews regarding the grills inability to properly sear a steak.....PLEASE HELP!!! I have a 35 person bbq booked for Thursday and need to make a final decision.

ExecMemberMike said...

Hi @Fred just like everything else, the reviews seem to vary per person for the Duro NXR Tabletop Grill. I gues it just depends. I'm thinking that the Coleman grill has a total of 20,000 btu (so 2 x 10,000). I can't really say which one you should go with, but I can offer some recommendations which can minimize your chances of having disappointed guests.

My first recommendation (which is what I would personally do) is maybe test out the Duro NXR grill. Try preparing the same food you'll be cooking on Thursday for dinner (maybe only 1 or 2 portions) for you or your family as practice prior to Thursday's event and see how that goes. You'll be more familiar with the grill and adjust accordingly for Thursday. You can always return the Duro NXR grill to Costco if you didn't like the way it performed.

Or if you don't want to go with a practice run or you don't have the time to do so, you can have both grills on hand on Thursday. Start off with one of the grills (either the Duro NXR or Coleman). If all goes well, great - you can just return the other. If you find that the grill isn't performing well on the other hand, then quickly switch to the other grill and finish the service with that. Costco usually has a good return policy if you're not satisfied with your purchase. I just wouldn't want 35 people to come away hungry, so if it means having both grills, then so be it.

I hope this helps. Whatever you decide to do on Thursday, I hope things will work out for you and that your guests will come away happy with your food and leave with bellies full. Good luck!

Unknown said...

Thanks Mike. Your right Costco has the best return policy of any company on the planet. I like the all stainless steel look of the Duro NXR it's more in line with our chaffing dishes ect. ...and the price is incredible. Thanks for the advice. I appreciate your time. Cheers

ExecMemberMike said...

Hi @Anonymous, maybe it's oil to prevent rusting or excess glue that is holding it together? Your guess is as good as mine in regards to that mystery substance on the Duro NXR Grill.

We just bought this at Costco in Abbotsford BC and have just used it for the first time. Grilled honey garlic sausages and they turned out wonderfully. My husband says it cooks very evenly.
We had no problems putting it together as all you really have to do is put the legs on and then put the removable insides in place. And we had no problems getting it to light either.
We are very happy with the construction and material. This should last us a very long time indeed.

Hi. I live outside the US. While visiting in Miami, FL last June I purchased on of the Duro NXR 2000 BTU Table Top Grills @ the Kendall store. Now I would like a second one as a gift for a friend. Can you inform me about this item's inventory on the east coast so I can order via my Costco account?

Hello @CarlosA, I think that's great that you want to get the Duro NXR Tabletop Grill for a friend as a gift. Unfortunately, I don't really know what the inventory is like for this product in the Costcos over in the East Coast. I only saw this grill at my local Costco here in California. If you read some of the comments posted by other readers, they sometimes mention which Costco location they saw the NXR grill at. I hope this helps and I hope you're able to find another one!

I purchased this grill about 2 weeks ago from the Willingdon Costco in Burnaby, B.C. I needed a smaller grill after moving into an apartment. So far I've cooked striploin steaks, t-bone steaks, beef kebabs, smokies, hamburgers, and two whole butterflied chickens.

The grill heats up very quickly and the 20,000 BTUs appears to be sufficient heat for proper searing. Heating appears to be even, with no hot or cold spots.

My major complaint is flare ups, particularly when grilling chicken. My first attempt to cook a whole chicken ended badly. I preheated to medium heat, put the chicken on, and briefly took my eye of the grill. Almost immediately, the chicken was engulfed in flames and charred black. I ended up having to finish it in the oven.

On the second attempt, I preheated to the lowest possible heat and used a spray bottle to control flare ups. 15 minutes skin side down and about 30 minutes skin side up (with 10 minutes resting) and diligent control of flare ups resulted in a perfectly cooked and delicious whole chicken.

T-bones were a nice medium rare (closer to rare) after about two and a half minutes a side on high heat. Again, lots of flare ups, but that is not as much a concern with steak compared to chicken,

Burgers, kebabs, and smokies were all very easy to grill. Again, watch the flare ups and keep that spray bottle handy.

Make sure the grill is on completely flat surface or grease tends not to flow into the grease catcher and instead leaks out the sides. The firebox is riveted and not welded which allows for leakage.

The one piece stainless steel grate is well made, heavy, and easy to clean thanks to its straight and simple design (something which is hard to find on entry level grills nowadays). This was a major selling factor for me. Although stainless steel grates do not heat up as well as cast iron (or leave the same grill marks), on the whole I prefer the ease of cleaning and corrosion resistance.

To the person who mentioned "beige steaks", in addition to first bringing your steaks to room temperature, you have to make sure to properly preheat the grill for at least 10 minutes at full. Also, make sure the gas is flowing properly. It is possible to light the burners (just barely) while the regulator is in leak protection mode. This can happen if you open the grill controls before opening the tank valve. If so you have to reset the regulator by disconnecting it from the tank, waiting a few minutes, then reconnecting it to the tank. Then start the grill again making sure to open the gas on the tank before opening the controls on the grill.

Overall, a good little grill for the price.

ExecMemberMike said...

Hi @Anonymous, thank you for your thoughts on the Duro NXR Tabletop Grill. I think with most grills, it usually works great once you get to know your grill after the first few uses. There always seems to be a learning curve in knowing how to use it since not all grills are the same. It definitely sounds like you've perfected using this grill, and I'm glad to hear that you're making a lot of pretty good food on it which is actually making me hungry right now.

Greg Hall said...

It doesn't come apart to clean. It's a good grill. But once it gets really dirty with grease the fumes get to be toxic. Would love to learn how to take it apart and clean it.

ExecMemberMike said...

Hello @Greg, it seems like the Duro NXR Tabletop Grill is similar to the George Foreman grills in which they weren't meant to be taken apart to be cleaned for some odd reason. I guess the best way to clean them is to just scrub the grill grates with a steel grill brush and wipe the other parts down immediately after every use to avoid long cleaning sessions.
